THE USE OF ICT IN EDUCATION.ITS DATA.

Analysis of the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) integration in Spain.

On the INTEF (National Institute of Educational Technologies and Teacher Training) website,  an organization belonging to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports in Spain, are available statistics data about the integration and presence of the ICT in the educational sector. These data correspond to the 2014-2015 school year, for the moment the latest available data.

From BioProfe we have picked the data that we have considered relevant to try to offer an exact and realistic situation about using ICT in the Spanish educational system, waiting for the 2015-2016 data  to be published.

Almost all the educational centres in Spain had an Internet connexion during the 2014-2015 academic year. Specifically, 99.9% of them. However, this connexion didn´t reach the classrooms in all cases. Only the Basque Country had 100% of classrooms connected. Regarding other Regions: Andalusia, Canarias and Asturias had the worst rate, below 90%, and Community of Valencia and La Rioja were near to the Basque Country data. In all, the average of classrooms with Internet connexion in Spain was 92.7%.

With regards to the type of devices, computers and laptops were more used than tablets. Its presence was still testimonial, a 3.6% against 51.2% of computers and 45.2% of laptops. As a curiousity, Murcia, Community of Valencia and Madrid were the regions with more computers in their centres, and Castilla La Mancha had the best data on the use of Laptops, a 71.2%. Regarding the use of tablets, Aragón led the ranking with a 23.5%.

These devices were used mainly for teaching tasks. A 77.1% were used for teaching or used by students directly, rather than preparing classes, follow-up student’s activities or administrative  tasks.

On average, in the Spanish centres in that academic year, were 3 students per computer rate. Although numbers were very similar, there was a lower rate in the public than in the private centres, 2.8 versus 3.2. Extremadura, País Vasco and Baleares Islands had the lowest rate, and the Region of Murcia, Madrid and Community of Valencia had the highest, in no case over  5.7.

The number of computers per unit or group in the educational centers of Spain has been growing exponentially: from only 3 available in 2009 to 6.4 in the 2014-2015 academic year.
